The route · where attendees fly from

Where most legs originate

Art-world traffic arrives from London, Paris and Geneva, with Milan and New York for the major collectors. EuroAirport sits right on the city; Zurich takes the long-haul and heavy metal.

Getting in · the part nobody tells you

EuroAirport is the gateway — mind the border

Basel’s EuroAirport straddles France, Switzerland and Germany with separate customs sectors. For art and valuables that distinction matters — clear through the correct side. Peak fair week tightens slots and parking.

LAND HERE Where you actually land

  • LFSBEuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse — the primary jet gateway, ~10 min by car or tram to Messe Basel; binational French/Swiss sectors.
  • LSZHZurich — ~1 hour out, the choice for long-haul arrivals and heavy jets; train or chauffeur into Basel.
  • LSZBBern — light-jet overflow if EuroAirport parking is full; ~1 hour by road.

WATCH OUT What catches people out

  • BORDER CUSTOMSEuroAirport’s French and Swiss sectors are separate — declare art and valuables through the correct side or face delays.
  • PEAK PARKINGFair-week ramp space at EuroAirport fills early; some jets reposition to Zurich or Bern and run the road.
  • HOTEL SCARCITYThe whole city books out for Art Basel — secure rooms or a villa months ahead, or stay over the border.
  • MESSEPLATZ ACCESSTram and road routing around Messeplatz changes during the fair; brief your driver on the drop-off point.

Plan it like this

It’s effectively a city airport

EuroAirport is minutes from Messe Basel — clear the correct customs sector, and a short chauffeur or tram ride has you at the halls. The only real planning is the border side and fair-week parking.

1 · Empty leg into EuroAirport (LFSB)
2 · Clear the correct French/Swiss sector
3 · ~10 min to Messe Basel
What it costs

Empty leg vs full charter, plus the transfer

Intra-European legs into EuroAirport price like any Swiss charter; the value sits on the Sunday repositioning legs once the fair closes.

Sanity-check any "deal" against the benchmark:   Light jet €3,000–4,500/hr · super-mid €6,000–9,000/hr · London–Basel is ~1h30.
Add the transfer:   Add a ~10–15 min chauffeur from EuroAirport, or ~1 hour from Zurich if you came in heavy.

Questions · Art Basel Basel specifics

Good to know before you book

Which airport for Art Basel?
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse (LFSB/BSL) — it sits ~10 minutes from Messe Basel and is the obvious private-jet gateway. Heavy and long-haul jets often use Zurich (LSZH), about an hour out, with a chauffeur or train into the city.
Why does the French/Swiss border matter?
EuroAirport is binational with separate customs sectors. For artworks and valuables, clearing through the correct side avoids delays — brief your handler in advance, especially if you’re carrying or collecting works.
Is this the same as Art Basel Miami Beach?
Same brand, different fair. Basel is the June original in Switzerland; Miami Beach is the December edition in Florida. We run a separate page for each because the airports, routes and seasons are completely different.
When do empty legs appear?
Densest around the VIP preview (16–17 June) and the Sunday close, on the London, Paris and Geneva hops. Fair week is tight on parking, so set a route alert and move quickly.
Keep exploring
