Europe’s largest sailing regatta — and in 2026 its 200th anniversary. Around 1,000 boats and 8,000 sailors race the Solent while 100,000+ spectators line the shore. There is no jet airport on the Isle of Wight, so the play is into Southampton or Bournemouth, then a helicopter or fast launch across the water.

The route · where attendees fly from

Where most legs originate

Cowes draws the British and northern-European sailing set. Most empty legs originate from London, the Riviera marinas and Geneva in the run-up to the first week of August.

Getting in · the part nobody tells you

No runway on the island — the crossing is the whole game

The flight is the easy part. The variable is the last few miles of water between the mainland and Cowes, and how you choose to cross it.

LAND HERE Where you actually land

  • EGHISouthampton — the main jet gateway, 1,723 m runway takes most midsize jets; 20 min to the Solent crossing points.
  • EGHHBournemouth — longer runway, more parking and slots; ~45 min by car to the Hamble launch points.
  • EGHJBembridge (Isle of Wight) — short grass strip, turboprops and very light jets only, daylight; lands you on the island itself.

WATCH OUT What catches people out

  • NO JETS ON IOWThe Isle of Wight has no jet runway — do not plan to land at Cowes. You land on the mainland and cross.
  • SOLENT TRAFFICDuring race week the Solent is dense with 1,000 boats; private launch skippers know the safe corridors, a self-hire RIB does not.
  • PARKINGSouthampton stands fill fast in the first week of August — book the slot early or plan to reposition the aircraft.

Plan it like this

The clean run

Land Southampton, step onto a skippered launch at Town Quay, and you are in Cowes inside half an hour — bags handled, no ferry queue.

1 · Empty leg into Southampton (EGHI)
2 · Pre-booked launch or helicopter across the Solent
3 · Drop at Cowes Yacht Haven / Shepards Marina
What it costs

Empty leg vs full charter, plus the transfer

An empty leg into Southampton plus a launch across the Solent typically lands well under the cost of a full charter the same week.

Route → gatewayEmpty legFull charterPer person ÷6
London → SouthamptonEGKB/EGLF → EGHI £2,400–4,200£6,500–9,000£400–700
Geneva → SouthamptonLSGG → EGHI £7,500–11,000£16,000–22,000£1,250–1,850
Sanity-check any "deal" against the benchmark:   Light jet £1,500–3,000/hr · midsize £4,000–6,000/hr · the London hop is well under an hour.
Add the transfer:   Add £600–2,600 for the Solent crossing depending on launch vs helicopter.

Questions · Cowes Week specifics

Good to know before you book

Can I land a private jet on the Isle of Wight?
Not a jet. Bembridge (EGHJ) is a short grass strip suitable for turboprops and very light aircraft in daylight only. Jets land at Southampton or Bournemouth on the mainland.
Helicopter or launch across the Solent?
Helicopter is fastest (~8 min) and weather-robust; a skippered fast launch (~25 min) is cheaper and drops you straight into the marina. Both beat the car-and-ferry queue in race week.
How far ahead do empty legs appear?
Usually one to four weeks out. Cowes pulls northbound traffic, so set a route alert rather than waiting for an exact-date match.
