The Aegean’s A-list summer island — superyachts off Nammos, the beach-club circuit, and the most concentrated private-jet traffic in the Mediterranean each August. Mykonos airport (LGMK) is small and slot- and parking-constrained at peak, so many jets drop and reposition to Athens.

The route · where attendees fly from

Where most legs originate

Mykonos pulls from the European capitals and the Gulf all summer. The richest empty-leg flow is London, Geneva, Paris and Athens, plus Dubai on the long-haul.

Getting in · the part nobody tells you

A small island airport doing big-season numbers

Mykonos handles a remarkable volume of private traffic in August on a single runway with limited parking. Knowing the workaround is the difference between landing on the island and circling to Athens.

LAND HERE Where you actually land

  • LGMKMykonos (JMK) — single 1,935 m runway; takes midsize and many heavies, but slots and ramp parking are the bottleneck at peak.
  • LGAVAthens — the unconstrained heavy gateway and reposition base; 35-min hop or helicopter onward to Mykonos.

WATCH OUT Where August bites

  • SLOT SCARCITYPeak-August arrival/departure slots at LGMK are limited and go early; build the slot before the trip, not on the day.
  • NO OVERNIGHT PARKINGRamp space is tight — most jets drop passengers and reposition to Athens rather than sit on the island.
  • MELTEMI WINDSStrong afternoon meltemi can disrupt approaches; morning slots are calmer and more reliable.

Airport to beach club / yacht

Land Mykonos + car~10 min €60–150Straight to town or the south-coast beach clubs if you hold a slot.
Helicopter from Athens~40 min €3,800–6,500The reliable workaround when Mykonos slots or parking are gone.
Tender to yachtvaries by arrangementDirect from the old port to a yacht at anchor off Psarou or Ornos.
Plan it like this

If the slot is gone

Land the heavy metal at Athens, switch to a helicopter for the 40-minute Aegean hop, and you are on the island without fighting for a Mykonos jet slot.

1 · Long leg into Athens (LGAV)
2 · Helicopter or 35-min light hop to Mykonos
3 · Car or tender to club / yacht
What it costs

Empty leg vs full charter, plus the transfer

Empty-leg pricing on the summer corridors runs well below full charter — but factor the Athens workaround if you are travelling at the August peak.

Route → gatewayEmpty legFull charterPer person ÷6
London → MykonosEGGW → LGMK £9,000–16,000£22,000–32,000£1,500–2,700
Geneva → MykonosLSGG → LGMK €8,500–14,000€20,000–28,000€1,400–2,300
Sanity-check any "deal" against the benchmark:   Midsize €4,000–6,000/hr · heavy €6,000–12,000/hr · London–Mykonos is roughly 3.5–4 hr.
Add the transfer:   Add €3,800–6,500 if you route via Athens and helicopter onto the island.

Questions · Mykonos specifics

Good to know before you book

Why do some jets land at Athens instead of Mykonos?
At the August peak, Mykonos has limited arrival slots and almost no overnight ramp parking. Heavier jets often land Athens, then passengers take a 40-minute helicopter or short light-jet hop to the island.
Can a heavy jet land at Mykonos?
Yes — the 1,935 m runway accepts many heavies, but the constraint is slots and parking, not runway length. Hold the slot before you commit to landing on the island.
When do summer empty legs appear?
Throughout the season, densest in July and August. Because peak weeks clear fast, a route alert beats waiting for an exact-date listing.
